An "inland" city, Cheraw is considered one of the oldest in the state- appearing on maps as early as the 1750s. Sherman's troops occupied Cheraw for an unusually long period of time during the Civil War. They enjoyed the city so much, that it was spared being destroyed by fire.
Today, a fine wooden sign, set on a beautiful display of brick welcomes visitors to the small town of Cheraw (population of about 6,000.) This grand display, surrounded by a well-manicured garden, sets the stage for what you'll find here- a progressive, charming town that takes obvious pride in its history. It doesn't take long to notice that this is a honest-to-goodness community, just waiting to be discovered. Cheraw residents are pleased to remind you that Cheraw is the hometown of famous jazz trumpeter, Dizzie Gillespie.
Cheraw's 213-acre National Register Historic District is a true delight. Comprised of more than 50 antebellum buildings and numerous Victorian and Revival structures, the variety of architecture is striking. Consider enjoying a self-guided walking tour through the numerous tree-lined streets of downtown. Or, visit one of the small gift shops or eateries that dot Cheraw's modest downtown. Either way, you'll be in store for a fulfilling, casual afternoon.
For those who seek natural beauty, visit Riverside Park or Cheraw State Park. Riverside Park is located downtown, on East Church Street. It offers overlooks to the Pee Dee River, a walking trail, picnic area, and boat launch. Cheraw State Park is considered one of the finest parks in the state system- largely due to the variety of opportunities it offers. From an 18-hole championship golf course, to equestrian, biking and hiking trails, to fishing and boating- there's really something here for everyone. Consider a stay in one of the park's quaint rustic cabins, and maybe you'll catch a glimpse of the Red Cockaded woodpecker.
Cheraw is located in the northeastern part of the state, near Highway 9 on the banks of the Great Pee Dee River.
