Also known as the research triangle, the three adjoining cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are home collectively to three major universities, some pleasant parks, a handful of good museums and big name research centers.
The Mint Museums are comprised of the Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Crafts + Design, and though housed at separate locations together they form Charlotte's largest art-oriented exhibit space. Developed as North Carolina's first art museum in the former United States Mint, the Mint Museum of Art showcases a permanent collection of art from the 18th century to the present, with more contemporary works on display in the new expansion space. Opened in 1999, the Mint Museum of Craft + Design explores a range of mediums, from fiber and glass to metals and wood with contributions from both emerging artists and established talent.
