York, South Carolina Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

York, South Carolina is situated in the northern part of the state, just miles south of the North Carolina boarder. This town saw a great deal of tragedy during the Civil War, but by the late 1800's, cotton mills brought financial stability, and even great wealth to the town.

Today, about 10,000 people call the "Charleston of the Upcountry" home. Many grand homes remain- making it easy to image what life was like 100 years ago. You'll find this town enjoys hosting festivals, and preserving its roots. Identified by the National Register of Historic Districts, York's downtown boasts 180 historic structures. York's Historic District is one of the largest in the entire country.

Walk through Downtown York's tree lined streets and you'll quickly get a feel for the place. Small two story brick buildings house a variety of interesting eateries. Hip gift shops stand alongside genuine general stores. York offers a number of shops that sell locally handmade items, such as pottery, guitars, golf clubs, and textiles. Downtown hosts the Farmer's Market from May-August.
