Also known as the research triangle, the three adjoining cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are home collectively to three major universities, some pleasant parks, a handful of good museums and big name research centers.
Railroading may no longer be Wilmington's chief industry but visitors can at least get a glimpse of the big engines that once chugged along the Wilmington & Wealdon Railroad at the Wilmington Railroad Museum. Clambor around on a real steam engine and see rolling stock up close in the museum's outdoor space, then head inside to explore their elaborate model train set ups, displays related to life along the rails and let young ones play at conductor in the designated Children's Hall
