Description

Welcome to the Kinderhook Horse Trail. Horses, mountain bike riders, and hikers are welcome on this trail. This is the Wayne National Forest's newest trail system which provides 16 miles of scenic riding. The trail winds through some of the steeper hills on the Wayne National Forest. It will lead you through a variety of vegetation: open fields, brushland, mature forest, and new forest. Along the way, you may glimpse wildlife, and will recognize the influence of humans, both now and in the past. You will also pass many of our land management activities.

Additional Details:

The trail system is closed to horse use from December 16th through April 14th.

Stay on the designated trail. The trail is marked by gray diamonds on trees or posts. By staying on marked trails you will avoid riding on private land.

The Kinderhook Cemetery is not in public ownership. Keep horses out of the cemetery and treat it with the respect it deserves.

Camping is allowed at the trailhead though space is limited. There is no charge for camping but please leave nothing but footprints.

Oil and gas roads cross the trail. These roads access oil and gas wells on private land and are not open for riding.

Oil and gas wells are private property and are very dangerous. Please keep away from them.

National Forest lands are open to public hunting. Please be aware of the different hunting seasons and plan your trail ride accordingly. State fishing and hunting regulations are enforced.

Water in ponds and streams can be used for horses, but is unsafe for human consumption.

No vegetation may be cut and all fires must be extinguished before leaving camp.

Off-road vehicle, mountain bike, and horse riders age 16 and older are required to have a permit and stay on trails designated for their use. Seasonal ($25/season) and daily ($5/day) permits are available from our offices and several local stores.
