From the mysterious disappearance of Roanoke settlers to the Wright brothers' first flight, the Outer Banks are historically important yes, but they are also postcard pretty with enough beach to share between summer visitors.
The North Carolina Museum of Art houses a very well-rounded collection of art and artifacts that ranges from early Egyptian funerary art to multi-media works by modern artists and includes pieces by well-known Impressionists and Renaissance masters. Take a walk down the short nature trail outside the museum for a closer look at the outdoor artworks showcased along the way and a bit of natural scenery.
