Bentonville Battleground (NC) This important Civil War Battlefield is a must-see for all Civil War enthusiasts. The Bentonville Battle was the last major offensive undertaken by the Confederate Army against the Union forces under William Sherman. DirectionsFrom the byway, head southwest on S.R. 1008 for about 2.5 miles. Gov. Caswell Memorial & the CSS Neuse Historic Site (NC) This historic site is home to the wreckage of the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ironclad gunship; and a memorial site for Governor Caswell, an important figure in North Carolina's colonial and Revolutionary history. DirectionsFrom the town of Deep Run, travel north on Rte. 11 for ten miles. The historical site is immediately west of Kinston. This historical site is dedicated to Governor Aycock, a pioneer of modern education in North Carolina. Several rustic buildings are furnished with pieces from the late nineteenth century. DirectionsLocated two miles south of Fremont on Hwy. 117. This museum depicts the farm life of early tobacco farmers. The exhibits illustrate the techniques and culture developed by East Carolina farmers in their cultivation of the "golden leaf." DirectionsFrom the western terminus of the byway, head north for about twenty miles on I-95. Exit on Hwy. 301 and travel north for approximately 1.5 miles. The museum is on the outskirts of Kenley.
